What happens during a therapy session? What can I expect?

Please know that I understand that coming to see a counselor, whether you are new to this experience or you have done this many times before, can be a very scary and uncomfortable experience.  It is my goal to make this initial therapeutic relationship as streamlined as possible and for that reason, I have many of my processes outlined here.  I hope that as you read them, you know that I care deeply about you and your experience with counseling and in no way want the sheer volume of what is written here to overwhelm you.  If you have any questions about anything you read here, please feel free to reach out to me and ask.  I am more than happy to answer any questions.

When you first contact me to schedule a therapy session, I will schedule a 15 minute free phone consultation with you.  This way you can determine if I'm the right counselor for you and you can tell me a little bit about what you are looking for in a counselor.  If you prefer the initial consult to be in-person, it will consist of a regularly priced 60 minute session.  

Please arrive on time for sessions and wait for me in my lobby or online waiting room for telehealth.  I will come out to get you when it is time for your session.  If you arrive late for your session, you will still be charged for the full hourly session and I'd ask that you please come directly to my office so we can get right to work.  If I am running late, I will either pro-rate your session or if possible based on my next client, extend your session if you would like.  

If at any time you are interested in ending our therapeutic arrangement, all you need to do is say so.  I will work with you to ensure a positive termination of treatment as all sessions and counseling is 100% voluntary on your part.  

 


What are the fees?  How do I pay for counseling?

My hourly rate is $170 and I accept payment via credit/debit card through my secure online portal.  I do not accept insurance but I do provide “superbills” for clients to submit to their insurance on their own if they prefer.  Payment is due at the time of services rendered and I have documentation prepared to walk you through using out of network benefits.

If you require additional services such as letter writing, collateral telephone calls, etc, I charge based on my same hourly rate.   At this time I am not available for legal evaluations or expert testimony in court and will not provide any services for any involvement you have with the court due to divorce, custody, etc.  

If you are unable to attend a scheduled session for any reason, I require 24 hours notification directly to me either via phone or email.  Due to the high level of cancellations and "no shows", I do ask that your keep  credit card on file with me for billing purposes.  All appointments that are missed or cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will automatically be charged 100% of my hourly rate for each missed appointment. 

Nonpayment of fees may result in me following through with legal action and/or contacting a collections agency.

 


How is confidentiality and communication handled?

While in your counseling session with me all information shared is considered confidential and I adhere to the standards of HIPAA.  

Due to the nature of my work, I am not always available to answer phone calls.  You can always leave a voicemail for me and I will try my very best to return your call within 24 business hours.  If I’m being honest, you have a better chance of hearing back from me if you follow up with an email after you leave a message. If you are having a clinical emergency or an emergency of any kind, please immediately call 911 for assistance or head to your nearest emergency room.  

I will received and respond to text messages about scheduling only.  Please know that texting is not an encrypted form of communication and that your confidentiality is not guaranteed.  If you text me information that goes beyond scheduling information, I will not respond to it due to confidentiality reasons.  

I will receive and respond to email messages within 24 hours.  Please know that due to the nature of the internet, email is not always a guarantee in regards to confidentiality.  Please do not send any information that you would feel uncomfortable if the confidentiality of it was breeched.  

I am not available 24/7 and so I would like to stress that if you will need 24/7 assistance or are having an emergency, please contact 911 immediately.  

I am active on social media and update my Breathe Balance Grow accounts with tips and wellness information on a regular basis.  Please know that interacting with any of my social media accounts is your choice and that it does not guarantee your confidentiality.  Any private messages sent to my social media accounts or comments on my posts regarding counseling will be deleted or not responded to.  In addition I do not accept any personal connections on any social media sites of current or former clients.
